Titus is a female monarch caterpillar (later butterfly) and the main antagonist of Pixar's 30th full-length animated feature film Hoppers.Starting off as a monarch caterpillar, she is the spoiled, bloodthirsty, and bratty daughter of the Insect Queen. After her mother's death, she becomes the next Insect Queen and pupates herself into a butterfly, only to later disguise herself as a male robot clone of Mayor Jerry Generazzo, the mayor of Beaverton. She orchestrates a genocidal revolution to eliminate humans and eventually all vertebrates with intent to create a world where insects reign supreme over all other species, only to fail in the end due to her death at the hands of the Amphibian King.Titus is voiced by Eman Abdul-Razzak, who works as the lighting technical director at Pixar Animation Studios, in her debut acting role, who also served as one of the lighting artists for the film. The robot's mechanical voice was provided by Dave Franco, best known for his roles as Eric Molson in 21 Jump Street, Jack Wilder in Now You See Me, Pete Seeger in Warm Bodies, Pete Grayson in Neighbors, and Greg Sestero in The Disaster Artist.
When Mayor Jerry Generazzo, enraged by the animals' renewed resistance, blows up the beavers' dam and installs additional noise-emitting speakers on trees to drive them away, Mabel Tanaka, a 19-year-old Japanese-American student at Beaverton University, hops her mind into an orange beaver Hopper robot, and together with King George, the Mammal King, they convene a meeting with the Animal Council in the Superlodge, attended by delegates from various species, consisting of the Insect, Amphibian, Fish, Reptile and Bird monarchs. Amongst the attendees also includes the Insect Queen's bratty and spoiled daughter Titus, a female monarch caterpillar who is projected to be heir. While initially the monarchs are hesitant to follow with George and Mabel's plans to take actions against Jerry's plans, Mabel criticizes them for their ignorance and warns them about the noise-making trees and how this would mean their land is at risk of being taken over by Jerry, whom she refers to as the Human King. Titus initially taunts Mabel, calling her a "web-footed commoner" but Insect Queen intervenes and allows Mabel to continue. Mabel urges the Council and animals to protect their homes, leading the Insect Queen to propose a solution to "squish" Jerry, implying his extermination and death. Mabel and George reconsider this violent approach, telling the Insect Queen to reconsider her decisions, only for Titus to find amusement in the chaos. This leads to Mabel accidentally killing the Insect Queen, leaving Titus in shock of her mother's death.Following these events, the Animal Council are at a loss of words and discover a robotic arm belonging to one of the Hoppers, suspecting that humans are now masquerading as animals. Overcome with grief, Titus demands silence, insisting on respect for her mother. The Council send condolences for her mother's loss, only for moments later for Titus's sorrow to become laughter and for her to steal her mother's crown and become the next Insect Monarch, revealing it is a role she has long awaited. She declares herself "Insect King" rather than "Insect Queen", leading to the other monarchs being hesitant while hailing her. With newfound determination over the Hopper technology she resolves it to use it as an attack against Jerry and the human race, hinting at her later impersonation as Jerry through a reversed version of Hopper technology. But before this, she undergoes a metamorphosis into a monarch butterfly, demanding the other monarchs to witness her transformation, only to elicit disgust as she weaves her cocoon. As she remains nestled in her cocoon, the Council orders Diane, a shark to help eliminate Jerry, only to be thwarted by Mabel, George, and their friends. Sam, Nisha, and Conner drive up beside in attempts to get Mabel back into her human form. Jerry remains firm in his decision, leading Mabel to call the animals to come get Jerry. Mabel is untethered from the beaver robot and back to her human form. The Council raids Sam's lab, leading Jerry and Mabel to be tied up. The Council forces the scientists to build a robotic clone of Jerry for Titus to inhabit. There, Titus emerges from her cocoon, now a monarch butterfly, only to transfer her conscience onto the robot. As the fake robot, she reintroduces herself by eating a leaf, leading Mabel to remember she was indeed Titus, scaring Jerry and leading him to be horrified. She struggles with the Jerry disguise as shown when she awkwardly falls several times and when she removes her tie, being disgusted by it claiming true kings show off their "plumage", showing the body hairs of the robot, revealing her struggles reminiscent of female struggles when disguising as male. She then reveals her ultimate plan: to masquerade as Jerry at the political rally where she will program all the noise-emitting speakers to release frequencies that can be fatal to human brains, thus killing all the humans in attendance and allowing Titus and the animals to rise up. Mabel, horrified, reveals not all humans are like Jerry, only to highlight Mabel's "deceit" and her "using" George. Titus then rallys the Council and a reluctant George away from the lab.Posing as Jerry at the rally, Titus gathers the citizens together and gives an uncomfortable speech, asking if anyone has squished an insect. Much to her surprise, nearly everyone has responded that they have, which struck a nerve in Titus as she bout to activate the speakers by using Jerry's phone that she stole. Meanwhile, Mabel, who had escaped with Jerry's assistance, interrupts with the rally with hope Titus can redeem herself and stop killing humans. Mabel apologizes to Titus for accidentally killing her mother, only for Titus to dismiss her apology and claim her mother was old and weak. Mabel then confronts Titus back, telling her she did, in fact, love her mother, and acknowledging that both of them had felt powerless at times, leading to impulsive decisions, insisting that it is never too late for change, emphasizing that humans and animals could coexist peacefully, quoting George's belief that human and animal homes are part of the same environment. Titus breaks into tears, only to burst into maniacal laughter as she mocks Mabel, making it clear she has no intention to back down on her plan. She learns too late of Mabel's backup plan to severe Titus's connection to the Jerry robot, prompting her to return her conscience to her original butterfly form, while she attempts to seize the phone Titus stole from Jerry. As she jumps back into the Jerry robot, they have a tug-of-war over the phone, leading the phone to fall on top of one of the trees, leading Titus to climb the tree and get Jerry's phone back. As she crawls like an animal, this leads the citizens to realize this is not the real Jerry. When the real Jerry intervenes by using Hopper technology to become a beaver like Mabel did before, Titus destroys the robotic beaver. Titus continues crawling, only for Mabel to stop her, allowing the silicon mask to come off. While Titus successfully grabs Jerry's phone, she fails to unlock the phone due to it not being able to recognize the face, realizing that the silicon mask was gone.Mabel tells Titus her plan is falling apart, but Titus angrily refuses to back down, revealing yet again her true intentions: to not only eliminate all humans but also the other animals as well, so that the insects themselves can take control of the world as their own hive. Unbeknownst to Titus, the Animal Council in horror overhears and realizes Titus's plans and that she was merely using them as patsies to orchestrate her schemes. When the tree gets toppled, the Jerry robot is destroyed and Titus returns to her butterfly form, causing a massive wildfire that will threaten to destroy both Beaverton and the forest.George rushes to help extinguish the flames, telling the Council to reflect on their indecision on whether to take action or remain passive. As they grapple with their choice, Titus, as she returns, foolishly, with no concern over the gravity of actions, reveals her ambition to lead the insect race to glory, questioning their audacity to ignore her, only for the Amphibian King, one of the Council members, to have enough of Titus's maniacal behavior, and eat her alive, leading to her deserved death. After her death, the crown that the Amphibian King devours as he eats Titus alive is then transferred with his tongue to one of the ants, crowning her as the new Insect Queen and new leader of the Animal Council. Following these events, even Jerry himself agrees to redirect the highway project to a different location that would leave the forest as a wildlife preserve, much to Mabel, George, and all the animals' delight, with them rebuilding a new and improved glade without a beaver dam, and Dr. Sam has permanently discontinued the Hoppers program after recent events. Sam tells Mabel that she, Nisha, and Conner are moving on to other things now, showcasing a plan for an animal communication device. Mabel offers to work with them as she needs a job now, and they enthusiastically accept.
Given she was marketed as the "Insect Prince" and "Insect King" and referred to with he/him pronouns in the Hoppers Press Kit, she is often perceived as male. However, given her characterization throughout the film, this is not the case, making her female rather than male.
Prior to the film’s premiere, it was thought Mayor Jerry Generazzo would be the main antagonist due to his greed and lack of care for the animals and their homes. This was actually a cover for the plot twist which revealed that Titus had bigger plans than Jerry does.
Titus is often classified as Pure Evil due to her lack of redeeming qualities, as she did not care for her mother's death and refused to back down on her evil plans. This makes her the first Pixar main antagonist from the 2020s to be classified as such, as previous villains classified as Pure Evil came from previous years: One-Eyed Bart (Toy Story) and Thumper (A Bug's Life) came from the 1990s, Randall Boggs (Monsters, Inc.) and Syndrome (The Incredibles) originated in the 2000s, and Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear (Toy Story 3), Sir Miles Axlerod (Cars 2), and Professor Zündapp (Cars 2) were from the 2010s.
Despite spending a significant amount of time as a male robot, she still remarkably holds the record for being the first female Pixar main antagonist to be classified as Pure Evil.
She is the eighth Pixar main antagonist to not be a twist villain and be revealed early on as a villain after Hopper (A Bug's Life), Randall Boggs (Monsters, Inc.), Syndrome (The Incredibles), Chef Skinner (Ratatouille), Professor Zündapp (Cars 2), Mor'du (Brave), and Lord Grigon (Elio), and the first of that category to be a female.
She is the sixth Pixar main antagonist to die after Hopper (A Bug's Life), Syndrome (The Incredibles), Charles Muntz (Up), Mor'du (Brave), and Ernesto de la Cruz (Coco) (who died twice), and the first of that category to be a female.
She is the second Pixar main villain to be small and of short stature after Chef Skinner (Ratatouille).
She is an insect, while Chef Skinner is a small man. This could mean that she is much smaller than Chef Skinner. This makes her the smallest villain ever created by Pixar, largely due to her microscopic size.
She is the sixth female Pixar main antagonist, after Screenslaver/Evelyn Deavor (Incredibles 2), Gabby Gabby (Toy Story 4), Terry (Soul), Ming Lee (Turning Red), and Anxiety (Inside Out 2).
She is the third female Pixar main antagonist that is a villain, following Screenslaver and Gabby Gabby.
Counting that Lilypad (Toy Story 5) was announced earlier than Titus, she would have been the seventh female Pixar main antagonist.
Despite being a female villain, she shares similarities with several male Pixar characters:
Hopper (A Bug's Life): Both villains are xenophobic tyrants of a species of anthropomorphic insects (grasshoppers for Hopper; insects population for Titus) who hate a heroic species where the main protagonist belongs (ants for Hopper; humans for Titus), possess a family link (Hopper has Molt as a brother and their late mother; Titus has the Insect Queen as a mother), and were devoured to death as defeat by a non-insectoid animal (Hopper was fed by the chicks taken by the bird; Titus is devoured by the Amphibian King by his tongue). The main difference is that while Titus is female and did not care for her mother, The only difference is that Hopper loved and respected his mother.
Heimlich (A Bug's Life): Both are plump caterpillars, but there is a difference between these two characters. Heimlich is a heroic male caterpillar of a dimwitted nature who struggles to transform into a butterfly at the end of the film, while Titus is a villainous female caterpillar with great intelligence who manages to successfully transform into a butterfly after usurping her mother's place following the accidental death of the Insect Queen caused by Mabel.
King George (Hoppers): She and King George are the only members of the Animal Council to have their names revealed.
Glordon (Elio): Her design as a caterpillar is similar to Glordon, who also is a prince/princess, but ironically, his personality is the complete opposite to Titus.
Titus's name means "honorable", which is ironic given her actions in the movie were the complete opposite, indicating that her character as a whole has always been dishonorable. And if it cannot get even more ironic, Titus is a male name, despite Titus being a female insect, making this even more ironic.
Titus's goals to wipe out humanity and vertebrates so arthropods, including insects and other invertebrates, can take over the world and the animal kingdom mirrors how invertebrates make up the majority of ninety-five percent of the animal kingdom, with arthropods as the largest invertebrate phylum and insects as the largest invertebrate class while vertebrates only make up the minority of five percent of the animal kingdom in real life. This is considered accurate as invertebrates evolved before vertebrates due to high production rates, small size, and adaptation to every ecological niche.
However, in a realistic manner, her goals would have been impossible to achieve time-wise as monarch butterflies only have a lifespan of six weeks, which is nowhere near enough time to commit mass genocide, meaning Titus would have died of old age before she was even close to achieving her goal. Seeing as she pupated in less than two days, however, it is possible that she and her mother do not follow the conventional life cycle of their species and she could've lived to see it fulfilled.
In real life, monarch butterflies are inherently poisonous to several species if they are ever to be consumed by them. This could be a reflection of Titus's "toxic" behavior, as she often displays an incredibly controlling, sadistic and apathetic personality.
Titus dies when the Amphibian King eats her, meaning in real life, he would've likely gotten really sick or vomited her remains (which of course would’ve happened offscreen).
According to a press interview with Dave Franco, she was originally meant to do the spider walk from The Exorcist when in the Jerry robot. This was cut, however, as filmmakers decided that all of the Jerry robot's movements beforehand were creepy enough.
Many fans considered her the first truly evil Pixar villain since Ernesto de la Cruz.
It is often claimed that Titus from Hoppers is male. The Hoppers Press Kit uses he/him pronouns when discussing about her and refers to her as the “son”, rather than the “daughter” of the Insect Queen. Plus, official posters and credits have referred to her as the "Insect Prince" and later the "Insect King." In addition, Dave Franco, who voices her Robot Jerry disguise ("Insect King" on the posters) was promoted as if he were the main, if not sole, voice behind Titus due to his frequent promotions discussing the said character, even claiming jokingly how he got to voice “Meryl Streep’s son.” Because the "Insect Prince" pupated to become the "Insect King", it has been often claimed she was a young boy, to the point some official art even has depicted her as such. Whether Daniel Chong, the director of Hoppers, intended to make Titus female or not, the claims she is male nevertheless fall apart, even within the fictional canon. While Dave Franco has been featured in promotions as the sole voice behind Titus and did voice her butterfly form aside from voicing Robot Jerry, her butterfly form only got five seconds of screen time, if not less, and would become Robot Jerry as soon as it regained consciousness as the robot, or worse yet, lead to her death, as revealed in her final words before being eaten by the Amphibian King. Not to forget, when Robot Jerry’s silicon mask was removed, its voice glitched like a mechanical voice, implying it is the voice Titus (or rather the scientists she forced) had to engineer onto the robot in order to make her impersonation as Mayor Jerry Generazzo actually sound like him. This was how it was only later on the citizens found out this was not the real Jerry. All this shows that Franco’s voice as the butterfly was mainly out of convenience and not her actual voice in-universe. While Jon Hamm voiced the real Jerry rather than Dave Franco, this was to show Pixar’s emphasis on realism and how an impersonated mechanical voice is not exactly the same as the real voice, henceforth the two different actors, as well as the contrast between the two personalities, given she was maniacal and unhinged while Jerry was more organized and bureaucratic. It was also additionally done to show that while she did convince the crowd, it still had its flaws and differences and she did get detected later on rather than earlier. Outside of Robot Jerry, her main form was the caterpillar form rather than the butterfly form given her forced pupation and lack of screen time. The real voice behind this form, as revealed in posters and now an official tweet by the creator himself, is not Dave Franco, but none other than Eman Abdul-Razzak, who works as the lighting technical director at Pixar Animation Studios. Contrary to popular belief Abdul-Razzak was a young boy due to her namesake and role, she is actually female. In the United States, as well as internationally, while it has been the standard for women to voice boys, as seen with Nancy Cartwright’s role as Bart Simpson in The Simpsons or Ikue Ōtani’s role as Tony Tony Chopper in One Piece, Pixar has casted actual children for these roles instead, not only domestically but also internationally, meaning Abdul-Razzak’s role would be considered unusual when voicing a boy under Pixar. Not only that, Abdul-Razzak used her natural voice when voicing Titus, while most women train their voices every day to sound more boyish, making a boy Titus not only unusual, but also fundamentally impossible, especially due to her sounding distinctively female rather than neutral or childlike unlike female-voiced boys.Across international dubs, she has a diverse cast of actors, whether it is her main form or as Robot Jerry, just as every character does, to match the language of viewers across the globe. While all of the actors who voiced her Robot Jerry form are adult men, for her main form, the actors who voiced this form have an even gender split, where half were adults (mostly women), while the other half were child actors (mostly boys), with the original voiced by Abdul-Razzak, a woman, which is unusual for a Pixar boy, given not only is he typically voiced by boys domestically, but also internationally across almost every country, not by women or girls across half the globe unlike Titus. Not to forget, while in the United States, Franco was promoting her, internationally across several countries, Abdul-Razzak’s counterparts, rather than Franco’s, were promoted instead as the voice behind Titus. In the Netherlands, several posts were made involving Nienke van Dijk, with none involving Florus van Rooijen, who was only known months after the film’s release given he was only featured on film credits rather than official posts promoting the film. A similar promotion was done in Korea, where Lee Su-ji is advertised across both tabloids and several posts as the dual voice behind not only Titus but also her mother, with Lee Hyun nowhere to be seen in promotions. In Japan, Ikue Ōtani, rather than Junya Hirano, was promoted and even cosplayed Titus, something she has never done for her previous roles regardless of gender. Even in Belgium, official news sources framed Kamiel Kolacny as the main voice behind Titus, rather than Pieter Verelst, who while also listed, was listed as a secondary role rather than Titus herself. It is not even known if Titus was genuinely a child or a grown adult, given how she only pupated after her mother’s accidental death at the hands of Mabel Tanaka, a human who at the time was disguised as an orange beaver using Hopper technology. Prior to her pupation, she mostly spent time sitting on a branch with leaves, not once taking action and still reliant on her mother. When her mother died, she was shocked, only for her sorrow to become maniacal laughs. She then declared herself the "Insect King", while still being voiced by Abdul-Razzak. It is only when she becomes Robot Jerry that Franco voices her, further showing the false promotion promoting Franco as the "Insect King." When she hailed herself "Insect King", the Animal Council was hesitant to hail her. While it is often claimed to be due to her apathy of her mother’s death, they were also at the time apathetic and selfish themselves, as shown at them doing the bare minimum to negotiate with or understand Mabel's plans, as shown when the Insect Queen refused to help Mabel, they almost immediately attempt to leave. Not to forget, she was the only available heir, as shown when she attended council meetings and even whined at her mother directly, implying she herself was forced to attend and as such was a legitimate heir. Evidently it is more than likely they were hesitant to hail her because she was female, and as such should be the "Insect Queen" rather than "Insect King."Not to forget, Titus only has a mother, the late Insect Queen, and her father is not known. When the characters Titus and the Insect Queen were announced, they were promoted as three posters rather than two, leading to claims that the "Insect Queen" and the "Insect King" were a couple, with the "Insect Prince" as their "son." In reality, the "Insect Prince" was evidently a girl who became her own father, the "Insect King", indicating there was no father to begin with, and was not even called a "prince" at all aside from credits and official promotions, which in many cases, can be misleading, rather than reliable. It is also unusual given the character and young version of the character usually have one poster promoting their dominant form, while Titus has two posters. Even if it were a caterpillar becoming a butterfly, it still is unusual, especially given it spoils the film which would make it less entertaining for viewers to watch. Not to forget, after Titus died, her successor was a female ant, rather than a male butterfly or male ant. Even in the fictional universe, it is an anomaly for a male heir to be featured in a hierarchy sandwiched between two females. Even though gender is highly fictionalized as shown when King George, the Mammal King, is intended to be a male beaver despite beaver colonies being matriarchal, in real life, he, at least, has a male patriarchy to back him up, supporting his male gender despite its lack of realism. All of this indicates the Insect hierarchy is meant to be matriarchal rather than co-ed, as enforced by how both the Insect Queen and the Ant Queen, who Titus is sandwiched between, are both female rather than co-ed.Even as a male robot, Titus’s struggles are also reminiscent of a female experience rather than a male experience disguising as another male. When she hopped onto the Jerry robot, she did it to mock and impersonate Jerry. After her metamorphosis, she navigated her new body and claimed her voice "dropped", showing how she mocked male puberty, which not only is atypical of what men, whether cisgender or transgender, experience during vocal changes, but also was even more odd given this happened while she herself was a robot mocking Jerry, not when she was a butterfly. She then removed the tie, despite being the mastermind who forced scientists to build the robot who measured every inch of it until perfection, showing how she was not used to presenting in a masculine manner, even though she clearly knew humans wear ties. Right after she hailed herself "Insect King", she discussed about her plans to the Council on how she was gonna proceed with "squishing" Jerry, and during this discussion she hinted at all this technology, implying she only hailed herself "Insect King" to impersonate Jerry and not because she was genuinely male. And she knew about Jerry, especially given before her mother died, Mabel was the one who explained what Jerry has done and as such, both Titus and her mother became well aware of Jerry, even nicknaming him the Human King, something Mabel started when negotiating with the Council on how to stop Jerry's plans.Given the way Titus sounds, the response she received when she declared herself "Insect King", her hierarchy and its differences with King George, on top of her experiences disguising herself as a male mayor, all of this combined cements her as female rather than male, making her one of the few Pixar antagonists to be female, solidifying her position as the most evil female Pixar antagonist, breaking Evelyn Deavor's previous record.
